10 Ways to Bring More Presence Into Your Life

March 24, 2026

In the words of John Lennon, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.”

Between juggling a million things, it’s easy to move quickly through our days on autopilot without ever fully being where we are. We think about what’s next. We replay what happened. And we rush through moments that deserve our attention.

But just like in yoga, presence isn’t something that happens automatically. It’s something you practice and return to again and again. Here are a few of our favorite practical ways to bring more presence into your everyday life.

1.  Note when your mind wanders
The first step to being present is realizing when you’re not. If you catch yourself worrying, replaying a conversation in your head, or daydreaming, simply notice it. Then gently bring your attention back to what’s happening right now without judgment.

2. Check in with your body
Most of us live in our heads. So, take time to pause and scan your body from head to toe. Are your shoulders feeling tight? Is your jaw clenched? Are you holding your breath again? Simply becoming aware of how your body feels in the moment can help you connect more deeply with the present.

3. Set an intention
In yoga, we often begin class by setting an intention to help guide the practice. You can do the same before starting your day, a task, or even a conversation by simply asking yourself: how do I want to show up today? Setting an intention helps anchor you in the present moment.

4. Focus on one thing at a time
While multitasking may feel productive, it often scatters your attention and drains your energy. Try doing one thing well instead. When someone speaks, truly listen. When you’re eating, take time to taste each bite. When you’re walking, notice what’s around you.

5. Savor the moment
Whether it’s savoring that first sip of your morning coffee, listening to your friend without glancing at your phone, or feeling the sun on your face, give yourself permission to be fully there. Even a few seconds of presence can transform an ordinary moment into something more meaningful.

6. Reduce screen time
When you’re inundated by endless notifications, it can quickly pull you away from the present moment. By consciously limiting your screen time, you create space to connect more deeply with yourself and your surroundings. Try leaving your phone in another room or opting for a book instead.

7. Spend more time outside
Spending time in nature is one of the simplest ways to return to the present moment. Whether it’s a hike in the woods or watching the sunrise over Lake Superior, immersing yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of nature can do wonders for revealing what’s right in front of you.

8. Pay attention to what matters
When stress builds, it can be easy to lose sight of what matters. That’s why it’s so important to ask yourself: what really matters here? Oftentimes, it’s the simple things we sometimes take for granted, like our health, relationships, and the countless things we have to be grateful for.

9. See challenges as teachers
Next time you feel frustrated, stressed, or overwhelmed, pause and try to see the situation through a teacher’s eyes. When you approach challenges this way, even some of the most difficult moments can become opportunities to grow in awareness and return to the present.

10. Try a yoga class
Yoga is one of the best ways to bring more presence into your life. Whether you’re drawn to restorative and gentle Vinyasa flow or prefer the strength and energy of Sculpt or Hot Yoga, we offer a variety of classes to meet you where you’re at.

Ready to find more presence on and off the mat?
If you walk away with anything, let it be this: you don’t need a different life to feel more present. You simply need to pay closer attention to the one you already have.

Presence is built in the small, in-between moments—savoring that first sip of coffee, a deep exhale while you’re at a red light, and every time you step onto the yoga mat.

And the more you practice making space for those moments, the more your days will begin to feel like something you’re truly living, not just making plans to live.
